Alice Springs Youth Curfew to end next Tuesday

The Alice Springs Youth Curfew will now end at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, April 16, according to a recent announcement from the Territory Government. The Youth Curfew will continue to cover the High Risk Area during the school holidays, and on Tuesday, April 16, the Emergency Situation Declaration will also expire. The extended proclamation permits an 18-and-under curfew, which is police-enforced.

Chief Minister, Eva Lawler said The curfew is proving to work as a circuit breaker measure. It is important that we don’t lose the momentum that we have established.

“We’re taking a common sense approach to improving community safety in Alice Springs. Work is being done right now to ensure that the community is prepared for when the curfew ends and we continue to have a strong presence from police, Territory Families and the Department of Education.” she added.

Minister for Police, Brent Potter said Our police have done an incredible job over the past fortnight in Alice Springs and we know they will continue to work hard to enforce this curfew over the coming days.

“Police have worked very closely with Territory Families and other agencies and that will continue well after the curfew is lifted.” He said.

Lawler said , If someone under 18 years old is in the CBD past 6pm and before 6am without a valid reason they will be taken home or to a safe place.

The Territory Emergency Management Committee provided this advice and will continue to monitor the situation on the ground in Alice Springs.

The announcement on Tuesday comes after a Monday meeting of top NT bureaucrats to consider extending the curfew, which was scheduled to expire on Wednesday.

The NT government declared an emergency on March 27 in response to reports of increasing violence in the red centre, which led to the imposition of a two-week youth curfew.
