Anwar Ibrahim named Prime Minister by Malaysian king

Malaysia’s king named Anwar Ibrahim the nation’s 10th prime minister after several days of post-election deadlock.

Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said he would be sworn in on Thursday at 5 pm (2000 AEDT).

Anwar's coalition, known as Pakatan Harapan, won the most seats in Saturday's vote with 82, short of the 112 needed to form a government, while Muhyiddin's Perikatan Nasional bloc won 73.

In a statement today, Comptroller of the Royal Household of Istana Negara Datuk Seri Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin said the appointment of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) chairman was made in accordance with Article 40(2)(a) and Article 43(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution.

The palace statement said the king was satisfied Anwar is the candidate who is likely to have majority support but didn’t give details of the new government.

The appointment was finalised after His Majesty deliberated the opinions of the Malay Rulers who convened a special meeting at Istana Negara today to make the best decision for the interests and wellbeing of the country and the people, he said.

Messages of congratulations have started pouring in from Pakatan Harapan leaders following Istana Negara’s confirmation that Anwar Ibrahim will become the tenth prime minister of Malaysia.

DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng said Anwar was fit for the role and thanked the Yang di-Pertuan Agong for his “wise” decision in choosing the PKR president as prime minister.
