South Australia has won the coveted title of "Best Australian Beach" for the first time. Stokes Bay on Kangaroo Island was chosen as the overall winner for 2023. On the north coast of Kangaroo Island, Stokes Bay is great for families and has a tidal swimming pool that is great for wading and snorkelling.

Brad Farmer AM, an expert on beaches, put together the "Best Australian Beaches 2023" list for Tourism Australia. Mr. Farmer has studied and been to most of Australia's beaches for more than 40 years. He says that Stokes Bay is "uniquely Australian and a new national treasure."

Mr. Farmer, who has spent a lot of time on Australia's coasts and is one of Tourism Australia's Friends of Australia, also put at least one beach in each state, the Northern Territory, and an Australian external territory on this year's list.

Little Bondi (Baringura), which is in the Northern Territory's East Arnhem Land and is less well-known than its famous namesake in Sydney, came in at number 7 on the "Top 10" list. Flying Fish Cove on Christmas Island got 9th place.

Also on the list of Best Beaches for 2023 are places that recognise the important cultural value of the coast to Australia's First Nations peoples, as well as a number of places in nature and a few unusual spots close to Australia's biggest cities.

Mr. Farmer's list of "Best Beaches" always makes national and international news, and Tourism Australia hopes that this latest list will also get the attention of international tourists who want to see Australia's world-class beaches.

Mr. Farmer said, "It's summer again, and international tourists coming back to Australia are eager to feel the sand between their toes and go on vacation on the world's most beautiful and varied beaches."

"Australia really is just one big beach, and there are so many surprises to find in our own sandy backyard."

Senator the Hon. Don Farrell, Federal Minister for Trade and Tourism and Special Minister of State, said, "Australia has the best coastline in the world, and more and more international tourists are coming back to our shores to explore our beautiful beaches. Every beach on the 2023 list is one of the best in the world, not just in Australia. As a proud South Australian, I am thrilled that Stokes Bay on Kangaroo Island has been named the "Best Australian Beach" for 2023.

Phillipa Harrison, the Managing Director of Tourism Australia, said, "There's no doubt that Australia's beaches are famous around the world, and they're a big reason why people from other countries visit." With about 12,000 beaches to explore in our country, including some of the best in the world, it's not easy to pick a "Top 10," so we thank Brad again for doing just that.

Australia's beaches are not only the best place to have fun, but also one of the best ways to make money in the long run, as long as they are well managed and protected on a national level.

This year's list is interesting because of its unique cultural connection to First Nations Country and because it includes some truly amazing beaches that aren't easy to find online. Mr. Farmer says that social media has "completely changed the game" when it comes to letting people know about new beaches and making plans for new vacation spots.

Australia has more beaches than any other country in the world. Our coastal culture is a big part of what makes us who we are as a country, and it is still the main thing that brings tourists here and from other countries.
