🔥Trio of Women Jailed for Fraudulent Superannuation Scheme

Three women from Queensland were sentenced to prison for their unlawful attempts to obtain superannuation benefits through the Federal Government's COVID-19 programme.The Brisbane District Court sentenced two women to three years and six months in prison after they both entered guilty pleas. In April, a third woman entered a guilty plea and was given a five-month prison sentence.In August 2020, the women were charged by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) anti-fraud Taskforce Iris following an investigation that found the group had filed multiple fraudulent applications seeking early release of $103,500 in superannuation payments.The women claimed to be other holders of superannuation funds using their myGov accounts. Once the offender was identified by a different Taskforce, the investigation got underway. After analysing the offence, the Serious Financial Crime Taskforce (SFCT), led by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), approved the investigation as a top priority. [Read more]

🎬Australia Post Survey Reveals Rise in Shipping Scams

Australia has seen a rise in the frequency of shipping and package delivery scams, with victims losing as much as $20,000.

Approximately 75% of participants in a survey conducted on behalf of Australia Post reported receiving fictitious delivery or package scam messages, and 27% acknowledged having been a victim of one. Of those, 5% had fallen victim to scammers and lost over $20,000. [Read more]

  • Large Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin reported a security breach today that cost 4,502.9 BTC, worth over $300 million. The exchange's wallet was accessed without authorisation at 1:26 p.m.

  • As crypto asset securities scams rise, the SEC's Office of Investor Education and Advocacy issued an Investor Alert on Wednesday.

  • Ali Martinez reports that 37,000 Bitcoin (BTC) worth $2.53 billion have been taken from cryptocurrency exchanges in the past 72 hours. Bitcoin fell 6.5% from $71,979 to $67,128 during this big move.
