BlackHat 2023: Trend Micro Dissects Top Cyberthreats

Trend Micro, a leader in global cybersecurity, today reaffirmed its commitment to educating the industry on cutting-edge tactics and attack techniques by sharing first-hand threat insights at Black Hat USA 2023, which runs from August 7 to 11. Visitors can stop by Trend Micro's booth #932 to test their cybersecurity expertise in an interactive challenge, see how threat intelligence drives Trend Micro's platform, and participate in sessions led by Trend Micro's subject-matter experts.

"Events like BlackHat offer a fantastic opportunity for us to bring our research to life," said Eric Skinner, Trend's vice president of market strategy. "We want to inform the industry not just about threats but also about the most recent tools required to reduce them. Our threat intelligence leads the sector and enables us to produce prolific research alongside initiatives like the Zero Day Initiative that aid in securing the digital sphere. We're excited to share our most recent findings and keep moving the industry forwards.

Trend has been on the cutting edge of threat research for more than three decades and brings this experience to BlackHat 2023 with a full schedule of events. Trend has the most geographically diverse customer base and research team in the world. By bringing research to life through hands-on learning opportunities, Trend aims to advance knowledge and skills throughout the industry, going beyond simply providing value to customers.

In the interactive Capture the Flag challenge "Hack a Hospital," which is at the top of the bill, players can take on the role of Red Teamers to assist the fictional St. Isidore Memorial hospital in testing its cybersecurity posture and earn rewards in the process. The kill chain of the event is consistent with the Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTP) used by the majority of ransomware groups active in 2023, such as Blackbasta, CLOP, Lockbit, and Royal. Professional incident response engineers will present a threat hunting walkthrough of the kill chain that participants carried out at the conclusion of the exercise to show how attacks can be discovered and stopped at an early stage.

A real-world attack that the Trend incident response team participated in earlier this year, wherein cutting-edge attack techniques managed to evade established defences and cause significant damage, will be dissected by Trend experts on the BlackHat 2023 stage. The timer will then reset to show how integrating XDR and Attack Surface Risk Management (ASRM) tools can identify and neutralise even highly skilled threat actors at an early stage. Trend analysts will also disclose fresh zero-day vulnerabilities in a range of settings, including Azure machine learning services and Apple OTA updates.

The importance of these researchers' work in reducing cyber risk will increase as new technologies like generative AI become widely used.

Trend Micro's full schedule of BlackHat and DefCon 2023 sessions includes:
