Samantha Mostyn is named by Anthony Albanese as Australia's next governor general.

Sam Mostyn appointed as Australia's upcoming governor general Anthony Albanese has announced the appointment of Samantha Mostyn as Australia's next governor general. During a speech in Canberra, the prime minister announced that Mostyn will become the 28th governor general and the second woman to hold this position. Mostyn will be officially sworn in on July 1. She will take over from David Hurley, who has served as governor general since 2019.

Speaking at this time following Albanese's declaration of Mostyn's appointment, she stated:

I am incredibly grateful for this wonderful opportunity and am looking forward to speaking for the ideals, goals, and aspirations of all Australians. I am prepared to serve with honesty, compassion, and respect, and I promise never to undervalue or take for granted the responsibilities that come with holding a high position.

Ms. Mostyn has held a number of positions in the past, including commissioner of the AFL, and is currently the chair of the federal government's Women's Economic Equality Taskforce. It comes after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese's suggestion that she be named as his envoy to Australia was approved by King Charles.
