Marcos Warns of "Act of War" Response to South China Sea Deaths

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said on May 31 that any Filipino serviceman or citizen killed by a wilful act in the South China Sea is close to “an act of war” and will be responded to. "We had already suffered injury, but thank God, we have not yet gotten to the point where any of our participants, civilian or otherwise, have been killed," Mr. Marcos said in the strongest language yet in reference to a growing maritime dispute with China in the South China Sea. But once we get to that point, we'll have crossed the Rubicon. Redline? He replied to a question from the floor after his keynote speech at the 21st Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore: "Almost certainly it's going to be a red line." Mr Marcos said in April that any Filipino death in the South China Sea due to “foreign power” aggression could invoke a US-Philippine defence treaty. Marcos again mentioned the US defence treaty in his keynote speech, saying, “Our treaty partner, I believe, also holds that same standard for when the joint actions will be undertaken in support of any such kind of incident in the Philippines.”

Marcos Jr. said Friday at the 21st International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that illegal actions continue to violate Philippine sovereignty, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction over the West Philippine Sea. The illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive actions continue to violate our sovereignty, rights, and jurisdictions. President Marcos said applying domestic laws and regulations outside one's territory and jurisdiction violates international law, exacerbates tensions, and undermines regional peace and security.
