🗳️ University of Adelaide Finds Consumers Spend More with Cashless Payments

The University of Adelaide has conducted a study that supports the existence of a positive "cashless effect" where consumers spend more when using cashless payment methods compared to cash.

The research suggests that the cashless effect leads people to spend more when purchasing products typically used to signal status, such as jewellery. However, the effect was not observed when donating or tipping. Traditional cash-based ways of collecting money, such as tipping jars and spiral wishing wells, are just as effective as cashless point-of-sale terminals to collect tips or donations.

The study provides useful insights for businesses and policymakers, as it highlights how payment methods influence spending behavior and helps empower consumers to make more informed purchasing decisions. Further research is needed to understand the unique features of buy-now-pay-later services and cryptocurrency payments, which have unique features that may influence payment behaviour. [Read More]

⚖️ In the 2024–25 State Budget, the State Government of South Australia is allocating over $15 million over the following four years for critical resourcing initiatives for the state's justice system.

🏚️ The State Government in the 2024-25 Budget plans to invest $47 million in South Australia's arts and cultural institutions, including an arts investment fund, $19 million for accommodation development, and $7.2 million for ongoing funding.

🏞️ The Malinauskas Government has announced a $139 million investment in the environment, focusing on national parks, animal welfare, and the River Murray. The budget includes $30 million over four years for maintaining national parks, $16.4 million for RSPCA, and $13.7 million for Lake Hawdon North wetland infrastructure. The government also plans to support River Murray operations, maintenance, and monitoring programs for five years. The budget also includes $4.8 million for the state's new water licensing system, mywater, and $6.5 million annually for protecting vulnerable biodiversity. The budget also includes a $20.6 million boost for Adelaide's beach sand management program.

🛖 The Malinauskas Government is investing over $843 million in housing over the next decade to boost supply, address homelessness, and help more South Australians into home ownership. The 2024-25 State Budget abolishes stamp duty for eligible first home buyers, saving $30 million over four years. The budget also includes $576 million for two major developments to build over 1900 homes at Seaton and Noarlunga Downs, including $425 million for redeveloping South Australian Housing Authority land and $150 million for developing vacant land.

🚑 The 2024-25 State Budget bolsters the Malinauskas Government's health system commitment with $2.5 billion in funding. The budget supports SA Health in increasing efficiency and meeting demand pressures. Measures include building new hospitals, introducing electronic patient care records, expanding renal haemodialysis, managing tuberculosis outbreaks, upgrading the Port Pirie Emergency Department, and funding youth mental health services. Public hospital workers will continue to benefit from cheaper carparking and free public transport.

🛏️ The 2024-25 State Budget offers a $266.2 million cost of living relief package for South Australians. The budget provides $51.5 million to provide an additional $243.90 cost of living concession payment to over 210,000 South Australians, a significant boost from their existing concession of $122. The budget also doubles the cost of living concession for 73,000 eligible tenants and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card holders. The budget also includes a $200 reduction in materials and services charge for the 2025 school year, $54.6 million to double the sports vouchers program, $10.6 million to extend concessional public transport fares, and $35.8 million social housing energy upgrade initiative. The budget also supports non-government organizations delivering services to the community, and supports the Remote Area Energy Supply Scheme.
