🗞️Press Freedom Threatened by Political Authorities: RSF

Politicians, who ought to be the guardians of press freedom, are the ones posing a threat to it globally. Reporters Without Borders' (RSF) most recent annual World Press Freedom Index makes this evident. Based on a global average fall of 7.6 points, the political indicator is the one that has decreased the most out of the five indicators used to create the ranking. RSF warns of a concerning trend identified by the 2024 World Press Freedom Index, which includes a decline in the political indicator—one of five indicators covered by the Index—as more than half of the world's population heads to the polls in 2024. The role of states and other political entities in defending press freedom is waning. Sometimes, this disempowerment coexists with more hostile acts that diminish the importance of journalism or even use the media as a tool through harassment or disinformation campaigns. On the other hand, legitimate journalism is a prerequisite for any democratic system and the right to practice political freedom.
