Socceroos reach World Cup

Australia stunned Denmark 1-0 with a solo goal from Mathew Leckie to reach the last 16 and send their opponents home from the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 for just the second time.
Mathew Leckie got the only goal on the hour – and it was one the Socceroos required given that anything less than victory would have seen them beaten to the runners-up spot in Group C by Tunisia.

Leckie's superb left-footed strike ensured the Socceroos followed the feats of the so-called golden generation in 2006 in reaching the round of 16.
First to his right, then onto his left, Leckie twisted and turned his opponent and fired a low left-footer to instantly enter the goal.
The vision of fans celebrating in Federation Square, which showed passion to match any nation, also went viral.
After 3am in the middle of the Melbourne CBD! 🤯 Fed Square looks a movie scene. Unreal. #AUSDEN#Socceroos

With France losing 1-0 to Tunisia, the Socceroos had to win to qualify for the knockout stages and this first time Australia has won consecutive games at the FIFA World Cup.
Australia will now face Argentina, Poland, or Saudi Arabia in the last 16.
