🗞️Telstra will cut 2,800 jobs, but CEO says retail customers won't be affected.

As part of a strategic realignment of its enterprise division, Telstra has announced the elimination of 2,800 positions. Vicki Brady, the company's CEO, described the decision as a "difficult day" for the telecommunications giant.

In an announcement to the Australian Stock Exchange, Brady stated that resetting the Telstra division that provides services to government and large businesses would result in a "streamlined product portfolio," fewer network applications and services products, and easier customer sales and support.

On Tuesday, Brady stated that most of the positions being eliminated will be finalised by the end of 2024 and that most of them were in the enterprise business. The business promised to discuss the changes with the union.

“The actions we are announcing today are difficult, but they are necessary to be a more efficient and sustainable business to ensure we can keep investing at the level required to meet the ever-increasing demand for our connectivity,” Brady told reporters.

“The jobs that we will commence consultation on today do not impact our consumer customer service team.”

According to the CEO, the adjustments were necessary to address the challenging market conditions, inflation, and rising energy prices.

Meanwhile, James Perkins, CWU National Assistant Secretary said “You can’t axe 2,800 jobs and not expect it to have an impact on service delivery .”

Treasure Jim Chalmer said “ I think this is a very distressing day for a lot of people who’ve received this bad news today from Telstra. And we’re thinking of all of the families who are impacted by these big job cuts at a major Australian employer. We need to make sure that the services don’t suffer as a consequence of these changes. And we will be seeking advice from the ACCC about some of the claims that Telstra is making about their new pricing strategy and the role of the NBN.”

He said from our point of view, we want to make sure, and the Budget was part of this, that as our economy changes, that we get better at adapting and adopting technology, that our people are the big beneficiaries of those changes in our economy and in our technology base as well.

“And one of the reasons why we’re so proud that over the 2 years of this government, we’ve created something like 820,000 jobs, is because we recognise that as the economy changes and the world changes, we need to be creating good, secure, well paid jobs and we need to be training people to adapt and adopt technology. And that’s our focus.” He added

On the other hand, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton said “I'm very sad today to see the loss of 2,800 jobs at Telstra. These are families – it won't just be these 2,800 people, but people and their families, and it's a broader symptom though of what's going on in the community at the moment.”

“As the Telstra CEO pointed out, it's a tough economic environment out there at the moment and it's deteriorating. The budget, according to every credible economic commentator, has put upward pressure on interest rates – or at least is going to keep interest rates higher for longer – and now the Prime Minister is talking about going to an early election before those interest rate rises take place and people's power prices continue to go up.” Dutton said.
