🔥WPP Chief Warns of Deepfake Voicemail Scheme

Mark Read was the victim of a sophisticated deepfake scam in which criminals attempted to persuade another agency leader to assist in establishing a new business and provide funding by using generative AI to clone his voice among other techniques. Even though the scam eventually failed, Read sent an internal memo warning the company's senior managers to be on the lookout for similar schemes going forward. According to UK newspaper The Guardian, the con artists also used a fictitious WhatsApp account and YouTube footage to arrange a supposedly Microsoft Teams meeting between Read, another unnamed WPP executive, and other individuals.

  • Google might be subject to even more criticism from publishers, who had already accused the company of violating the California Journalism Protection Act by blocking news articles.

  • OpenAI and Reddit announced a deal yesterday that will bring content from Reddit directly into ChatGPT.

Cybercriminals constantly seek new ways to scam us as security evolves. Online media shows authentication-in-the-middle phishing. These techniques, named after man-in-the-middle (MitM) attacks, have been around for a while but are gaining popularity. Users are tricked into visiting phishing sites that look like their bank, email, or social media accounts. After entering their login into the fake site, cybercriminals redirect them to the real site without their knowledge. User MFA is then requested. They enter a code or accept a push notification, and the criminals can login to the site with this information. [Read more]
