With services available for customers up to 400Gbps, Vocus, Australia's leading provider of fibre and network solutions, has upgraded its Melbourne to Adelaide cable route to 800Gbps technology and has committed to further upgrading its national network to the most recent 1.6Tbps technology.

Vocus can now meet the high demand from hyperscale cloud providers moving data between cloud regions thanks to the strategic move. These providers are creating the environments for the explosion in artificial intelligence systems, automation, and video applications.

Following the explosive growth of generative AI technologies like ChatGPT in 2023, Australian businesses are implementing AI technologies quickly. According to Gartner's CIO and Technology Executive Survey, nearly half of CIOs said they have already deployed or plan to deploy AI and machine learning within the next 12 months.

"AI models require enormous compute, storage, and network connectivity resources. According to Jarrod Nink, Chief Operating Officer of Vocus, "They run in hyperscale cloud environments, including the data centres connected by Vocus fibre.

"Large language models are processing petabytes of data and trillions of parameters. According to Gartner, generative AI will produce 10% of all data produced globally within the next two years as a result of the use of these models, he added.

Australia is investing heavily in data centres in anticipation of the AI boom. Microsoft, a ChatGPT investor, has received approval for the construction of its Kemps Creek, New South Wales, data centre, while NEXTDC is still expanding its Melbourne and Sydney facilities and building facilities in Adelaide, Darwin, and Port Hedland.

Globally, Artificial Intelligence system use is forecast to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 37.3% to 2030 according to Grand View Research. 

The upgrade from Melbourne to Adelaide is powered by Ciena optical transponders, which can provide up to 800Gbps line connectivity. Vocus offers customers services up to 400Gbps.

Additionally, Vocus is upgrading its connections from Sydney to Brisbane and Adelaide to Perth, with the added capacity scheduled to go live in 2024.

Vocus will be able to offer 400Gbps coast to coast as a result in 2019, but Mr. Nink added, "We're not stopping there; we've already committed to using next-generation 1600Gbps technology for our transit links, with the intention of offering customers even faster services than 400Gbps.

When Vocus upgraded its Sydney to Melbourne links to 400Gbps in November, it became the country's first fibre provider to do so. Comparing this strategy to other telcos who only use the C-band, it effectively doubles the fibre capacity.

It also has the advantage of being the most environmentally friendly strategy because it uses less power, which lessens its negative effects on the environment.

Cloud service providers and hyperscalers can move and replicate enormous amounts of data between cloud regions and data centres more quickly thanks to the 400Gbps technology.

By requiring only one cross connect at data centres instead of four when using 100Gbps hardware, 400Gbps technology also optimises cost for customers with extremely high bandwidth needs.

Customers gain from having to buy only one 400Gbps piece of hardware rather than four 100Gbps network components, which reduces power usage, requires less rack space, and makes management simpler.
